I'm considering placing this Fenland Wax Co. candle in a sheltered area; how likely is it to gutter significantly if exposed to a consistent breeze?

Due to its construction – a thicker wick and harder wax blend – the candle will be susceptible to guttering along one side when placed in a steady breeze. This is unavoidable with pillar candles outdoors and is primarily influenced by wind direction and exposure.

What’s the best way to approach the initial burn of a large pillar candle like this?

Allow the candle to burn long enough for the entire surface to melt evenly – ideally at least three hours. This establishes a ‘memory ring’, which will help prevent excessive guttering on subsequent burns and improve the overall burn quality.

About this candle

A thicker wick and a harder wax blend than an indoor pillar, so it keeps burning in the sort of light breeze that would extinguish a dinner candle. Unscented, deliberately — outdoors, fragrance is mostly wasted. Expect uneven guttering down one side if it sits in a steady draught for hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

The candle’s deliberately unscented formulation means a significant portion of the paraffin wax will melt and burn away. Expect considerable shrinkage – perhaps half or more – depending on wind conditions and the length of the burn. This is normal for outdoor pillar candles.
