Candles burn because of a complex chemical reaction – combustion. When you introduce an open flame to wax, it immediately heats up. This heat causes the wax molecules to vaporise, transforming from solid form into a hot gas. This gaseous wax then reacts with oxygen in the air, producing heat and light – that’s what we see as a candle flame. The speed at which this process occurs is fundamentally governed by several factors, most notably the surface area of the burning wick and the rate at which heat is transferred from the flame to the surrounding wax.
Number 1: Wick Size – The Key Driver
The size of the wick is arguably the most significant determinant of how quickly a candle burns. A larger wick provides a significantly greater surface area exposed to the flame. This means more wax vaporises and reacts with oxygen at any given moment, leading to a hotter, more vigorous flame and consequently, faster burn rates. Conversely, a smaller wick will produce a cooler, gentler flame, resulting in slower burn times. It’s a simple principle of heat transfer: a larger surface area absorbs and radiates heat far more rapidly.

The type of wax used in the candle also plays a crucial role. Different waxes have different densities and melting points, directly impacting how efficiently they burn. Soy wax, for example, is known for its lower melting point and higher volatility compared to paraffin wax. Paraffin wax, being denser and having a higher melting point, tends to burn slower as the heat required to vaporise it is greater. Beeswax occupies a middle ground – it’s denser than soy but burns cleaner and often slower than paraffin due to its higher melting point and lower volatility.

The amount of fragrance oil added to a candle can subtly influence burn rate. While not the primary factor, a higher fragrance load increases the mass of wax being vaporised. Some fragrances – particularly those with strong, volatile notes like citrus or pine – might marginally accelerate burn rates due to their inherent volatility.

Number 4: Wick Condition & Cleaning – Maintaining Optimal Performance
The condition of the wick itself is paramount. A carbon-laden wick, built up from previous burns, acts like a miniature chimney, drawing more oxygen to the flame and dramatically increasing its intensity and burn rate. This is why regularly trimming your candle wicks to approximately 5mm (1/8 inch) before each burn is so vital. A properly trimmed wick ensures efficient combustion and a slower, cleaner burn. Furthermore, ensuring the wax pool around the wick remains intact – preventing it from drying out and forming a ‘mushroom’ of carbon – helps maintain consistent flame performance.

Air currents, or drafts, can significantly accelerate the burn rate. A draft introduces a fresh supply of oxygen directly to the flame, intensifying the combustion process and causing the wax to vaporise more rapidly. Placing your candle in a draft-free area is therefore highly recommended for achieving a longer, more consistent burn. This isn’t simply about aesthetics; it's about maximising the efficiency of the burning process.

It’s important to acknowledge that candle burn rates are highly personal. Factors like room temperature, humidity and the presence of other heat sources can all subtly affect how a candle burns. A particularly large wick in a very cold room might burn exceptionally quickly, while a small wick in a warm, humid environment could take considerably longer.
