This guide will address some of the most frequent mistakes candle makers new to the craft make, offering practical solutions and advice to ensure your candles burn beautifully and consistently.
1. Incorrect Wax Temperature Control
One of the biggest culprits behind poorly formed candles is inconsistent wax temperature control. Different waxes – soy, paraffin, beeswax, or blends – have significantly different melting points and cooling rates. Pouring wax when it’s too hot will lead to rapid shrinking as it cools, resulting in sinkholes, uneven surfaces, and a soft candle that won't hold its shape. Conversely, pouring from wax that's too cool can cause the fragrance oils not to properly bind with the wax, leading to a weak scent throw – meaning your candle won’t release much of its aroma when burning. The ideal temperature depends entirely on the type of wax you are using; always consult specific manufacturer guidelines for your chosen material.
How to Fix It:
Use a reliable thermometer – an infrared thermometer is particularly useful for quickly checking surface temperatures without disturbing the wax. Maintain a stable temperature throughout the pouring process, using a double boiler or bain-marie to gently melt your wax slowly and evenly. For soy wax, generally, you’ll want to aim for around 175°C - 185°C (347°F - 365°F) for the initial pour. Paraffin wax typically needs slightly higher temperatures – around 80°C - 85°C (176°F - 185°F). Remember to allow the wax to cool slightly before adding fragrance oils, usually between 60°C and 70°C (140°F - 158°F), depending on the oil’s flash point. Monitoring your temperature is key – don't rely solely on visual cues; a thermometer provides accurate data.
